Never used the TLM-103 for vocals with him. Too harsh. Used it for guitars, yes, never vocals. Either go to the RODE NTK ot the APEX for him. His voice is too shrilly and raspy for that TLM.

Thanks though,

Doc
my appologies i thought you had listed a 103. must of been the NTK, i thought it was nicer than the apex on him. anyway some good tracks Doc. are you using the stock tubes in the NTKs?

hope i havnt strayed to far from the topic

No worries BB,

If anything this is helping show different mics and their abilities.

No worries.

Rode K2. I have seen them for as low as $500. I found one for $499 online and had my local Guitar Center match it. Sounds great and is a steal for $500!

if you don't have enough choices yet... these are sub-$600

MXL V6
RODE NTK
SHURE SKM 32
SHINYBOX 46

Good Luck

I strongly recommend trying out as many as you can to see what turns YOU on.

What kind of pre-amps / converters do you have ?

For about 300 or 400 more you can get an Audio Technica 4050 wich is a great mic, and in your price range you can also get the 4050's sister the 4033. Both are good mics. But to each their own. You should try and rent some mics and see what you like (thats right, I went there )

Another vote for the K2 here. Dont let the price fool you on this bad boy. I've had much success with this one.

I've also had success with the TLM 103 on Rock vocals. Straight into the top 40 in fact. But it's all about the singer and the voice in front of the mic.

chances are good that I will buy out of my local stores used/rented cabinet...

A 414 is up there on my list already, but I was hoping for some more opinions. Look like I got them

For preamps, I'm running a 002r [which I don't use the preamps on much] an Art MPA, MPA Gold, DPS ii and a focusrite trackmaster.

In case you are wondering why I have 3 art preamps, it's cause I got them all for $600.
