MIDI limitation question

Hey all, need a little help understanding how midi control would work. In my scenario I have a PT12.5 setup and a A&H QU-32 console that I setup with midi control. It used all 4 midi controllers with 8 channels to do the DAW control for the PT > QU32. Where I get confused is if I select a different channel are these then available for things like a midi controller kb to run my virtual instruments? Im not really clear if i used up all my available midi inputs and would need to sacrifice one. Sorry if I sound dumb here. Thanks.
