Will a TDM version and an RTAS version of the same plugin sound EXACTLY the same?
And regarding this topic, has anyone done a null test between the same plugin as RTAS and TDM?

If you were to print a track with an RTAS plugin on it, and then print another track with it's TDM version, would they null if you did a phase invert on one track?

Shane
Hi Shane, I did these tests sometime ago & no they do not null sufficiently. There is slight differences between the RTAS & the equivalent TDM versions, whether it's enough to say one sounds better then the other? I'll leave that up to you to decide.

Matt

Thare are some plugs which depending of their format (TDM/RTAS) could have different latency.
Even with PDC actived I think that just a little shifting of just one sample can cause a null test invalid.

This I like the way this is heading
In a few years people just buy less and less TDM plugins so manifacturers will stop coding their plugins TDM
wich will put digidesign in a tight situation and will start to make more native based systems.
Or HD will make a switch to DSD or DXD wich would justify the cost of an HD system (in my opinion) So either way it has it's benifits.

Or perhaps they'll make more Accel only plug-ins and less RTAS plug-ins.

If Digidesign would only put more fast RAM on their cards, we could have some of the processor intensive RTAS plug-in in TDM.

Yes, you can see the merge slowly happening. Checkout the "Poor mans HD rig..." thread. Some users are in this 'middle' are with RTAS only based HD 1 systems and some are thinking about going in that direction with the release of PT 7. Interesting times.

Correct me if I am wrong but that is the understanding I am under.
You're wrong with regard to Pro Tools 7.0

Rail
So what will the signal flow be in 7. I have read the white paper and was at AES in the seminars but I do not recall them saying that RTAS plugins can now be after TDM.

Thanks!
