Maxtor 40 gig System Drive

OK am running the above with no bugs anymore having removed my audio drive and am just running one drive for now. Thanks to Rail for his invaluable help.

Before going to add the next drive, I want to tweak my BIOS to maximise the speed of my XP3000+. According to the CPU BIOS settings I am only running at 1.3GHz which is way below the AMD XP3000+ capability. I have DDR 2700 ram (2 512 strips).

Can someone walk me through the correct BIOS settings to get more speed out of my Barton? I am not looking to overclock, merely maximise what I have.

Thanks in advance

I had the same prob until I updated the bios to vers 1003. I think there is also a vers 1004. Mine did funny things until I ugraded the bios. Give it a shot.

Shan:

BIOS was updated to 1004 before I did anything else....maybe I should go back to 1003 and see if that takes care of things.....I am also thinking that this may be a memory thing. Will be swapping my no-name memory for Micron PC2700 and see what that leads to...

can't believe I have an XP 3000+ and am only getting 1.73GHz!!

I still can't believe there are so many A7V333-X boards out there and no one can tell me the BIOS settings they are using for that board and AMD Barton! I remember about 2 weeks ago reading a thread where someone listed their BIOS settings in detail for this board and I can't find it anywhere anymore.

oh, & are all of the a7v333 (non x) boards 266 fsb?

thanks,
tony

Markus,
I'm not sure why you are having such a hard time here. Usually it is automatically detected. I'd set everything back to default in bios and try it again. You can also check the reviews for the XP3000+ on www.newegg.com website next to the processor description. They usually have the settings there or try www.amdzone.com
Good luck,
Allen

Hi Allen and others.
Being relatively new to the pc assembling art, I was wanting again to build a new rig with an Athlon over 2 GHz. My aim is to buy step by step, this week the CPU, next week the mobo and after 12 october 512 MB RAM. And so on further within three months at most to finish the rig. I was thinking of an Athlon 2500+, FSB 333. Along with that should come a 333 MHz mobo but I think this will soon be sold out everywhere. Could it be wiser to step in on 400 FSB CPU + mobo? Or how about the Asus A7V8X-X? This 333 MHz mobo has a VIA KT400 chipset. Anyone tested it? If 333 MHz mobo's will certainly enough last 'till the end of this year, which chipset should I choose? I am looking in the best shop I know in Amsterdam, but they only sell Asus mainboards and some minor quality brand. I like more the Gigabyte boards from what I've read so far, Abit also has some nice boards. But than I must find another shop. Leaving SCSI behind I think IDE/ATA133 will be fine, no need for a Raid controller or IDE controller on a PCI port if the mobo provides a good port, right? Sorry for the many questions. The idea popped into my head and I feel I can make a mayor jump from PIII 933 to an Athlon above 2 GHz within a few months. I haven't got a dime at the moment but eating nothing but rice a couple of weeks will enable me to get this thing together. Hope to hear from you guys. I'll read this topic some more but I just find it hard to find the right info among all the posts, I think I also need some advice. Thanks in advance,
Walther

Forgot to check the rock-Stable PT thread. I'll take a look there too.

Ok, to cut a long story, how about this?

Asus A7N8X-X 400FSB
Athlon Barton 2600+
512 Mb DDR400 RAM

Looking for Corsair or Micron RAM on first thoughts.

To begin with. The Asus mobo has a nForce 2 chipset, anyone discouraging results with this one? A few auxs' less on 32 + 12 is not such a big deal to me, but has anybody negatively tested the nForce 2 chipset finding boot errors or PT won't launch and such misery? If not I'll give it a go and post my results.

Hoping my Matrox G550 Dual Head AGP is 4x or 3x compatible. Than it can go along on the main board which is at least at 3x. GForce 2 I thought. Done a lot of searching tonight on this outdated G550 but found nothing. Any info on this is welcome.

The rest of the stuff is less (time) critical. HDD's, cdrom drives, case and peripherals will be compatible 'till june next year at least I guess. It will be totally sure that these parts will be compatible by the end of the year. But on the CPU/RAM/mobo combi I worrie a bit to get stuck with a half system that cannot be completed because of the time/compatibility issue and will end up to be just wasted money. Any info on this, am I just paranoïd or am I running this risk seriously? I know I put myself in a hurrie somewhat .....

Hi Voidco.

Just be aware that the A7N8x doesn't always like the Matrox cards (when using PT).

Phil O'Keefe has been through that with his setup. Check his posts on the subject.

This may relate to the 002 more than the 001 btw.

Best regards,

Haigbabe
