Re: Intel Core2Duo ... anyone got one working yet?
Wow, been busy around here! I'm running an Intel board, actually made by Intel: BOXDP35DPM, with a TI Firewire chipset. The P5K and P5KC also run a TI chipset. I think the P5K would be a solid board for the Q6600 builds. Also, I think most modern Intel chips have a safety net for if the CPU gets too hot where it will step itself down to avoid burning up. Not positive if the Q6600 has that.

Re: Intel Core2Duo ... anyone got one working yet?
I think the firewire controller on my board damaged thats all. I just plugged in to the auxilerary Fire Wire port adapter on the board and played back some looped sessions for about a hour and recorded guitar for about a hour, then did a Dverb1 test for a hour at 96K @ buffer 128 and got 85 dverbs
It's been fine running from the other port. Don't take your board back Just yet, we need to know how it works.

Re: Intel Core2Duo ... anyone got one working yet?
To all the new builders, the thing NOT to do is, plug in 4 CD/DVD burners, 6 SATA Drives, Intstall XP, start installing ativirus software and other apps, log on to the net for XP upgrades, install all drivers from the included CD, install every plug-in known to man kind....and then try run Pro Tools.
The first thing you need is True Image. Trust me. If you dont have that, dont even bother building until you get it. Your just waisting your time. Make sure you are very well grounded and have the manual at hand. You can ground yourself by touching a mic stand before you start. First, assemble a bare bones system with just the C drive and CD/DVD player and nothing more than that. With the manual for reference make sure you have TRIPLE checked EVERY single connection including PSU. Once you got XP installed do NOT do a thing. Power down, get the audio drive hooked up and power back up. Do NOT do anything to XP, simply install True Image, make an image of your C drive and keep the file on the audio drive. Name the file something that would make sense like "XP Basic" etc. After that, do the standard XP optimizations in the Getting Started manual and any other small things(I put XP into classic mode cuz that Fisher Price theme doesnt do it for me), add drivers, then create another image of your C drive. Call this one XP Tweaked. Trust me, you'll be using this alot when upgrading to future versions of Pro Tools. From this point do NOT do anything else except install PT. No plug-ins no nothing! Just the newest version of PT. Make another image of this and call it "XP with PT only" or whatever naming system works for you. From this point, fire up PT and work with it for a good hour or so. Run a few benchmark tests, to make sure you're in the ballpark with everyone else and do any BIOS optimizations etc. Once this is done and everything feels solid, THEN, you can start adding a million drives/DVD burners, plug-ins etc. Now that you have three solid True Images of your C drive, trouble shooting will be a breeze. Follow my basic outline above and it will make it alot easier to find solutions to problems that may come up. I understand the excitement and thrill to get this bad boy up and running etc, I've been there myself. But if you quickly just try and do it all at once in one go, you're looking for trouble and it will be very hard to troubleshoot when you have problems. True Image along with just a bare bones system is a MUST. Shane

Re: Intel Core2Duo ... anyone got one working yet?
BTW way the guys around here have been raving about TrueImage for years, I bought it for the first time yesterday and must say it works like a charm.
Shane has excellant advice in his backup plan. They just came out with TrueImage 10 and Newegg has TrueImage 9 on sale for 19.99. Its worth 20.00 bucks NOT to have to sit trough another Windows reinstall just once in my book.

Re: Intel Core2Duo ... anyone got one working yet?
did you check out CASPER XP also as we talked about?? if so, what's the advantage of TRUE IMAGE?? i assume it stores an 'image file' and is not a 'clone' of a hdd?? what's the restore time of an image file??? curious...

Re: Intel Core2Duo ... anyone got one working yet?
It took about 20 minutes to compress and write a 24GB MCE 2005 installation to a pokey 5400RPM USB Drive. The compressed file was about 8.9 Gb. You can compress it more but it takes longer. If I understood Shan correctly it take about 5 min to restore using a FW or internal drive. Its also very simple to use. I am highly impressed with it. I thought about CasperXP but with it on sale at Newegg for 19.99 as opposed to 69.99 it seemed like a no brainer.
Somebody else has got a new quad running tonite....

Re: Intel Core2Duo ... anyone got one working yet?
Well...in a way I'm lucky so far. I haven't gotten to all the Windows update stuff yet. LOLOL!!!
Ok. I'm gonna chill...sleep long and refresh myself to get the CPU on right tomorrow. Man. I almost wish the CPU fan just screwed on to begin with. The push tab thing was too easy so I made it difficult and messed up.
