Lightbulb OT: Bootcamp...reversed!!!???

i was turned onto this product today that i was unfamiliar with beforehand. for desktop users with GIGA mobo and INTEL quad proc's then this is pretty slick. allows one to load OSX from a retail install DVD to a dedicated hdd!!! device plugs into F_USB1 port on mobo (must use F_USB1 port). then device is recognized in bios. but if it works as designed (the cat that hipped me to it 'actually' uses it successfully) then it would be kinda slick for those that have XP (or VISTA)/PC based studios but have rentin' engineers that are OSX/Mac based. both worlds at your fingertips. BOOTCAMP-like, PC style!!! anyway...check it out...

I have one of those built, and it runs OK, but there are some quirks - I couldn't get it working with an nVidia video card, but it works with an old ATi card. BUT, it isn't a Mac-supported card so there aren't any drivers for it that I can find, and it doesn't support high resolutions. I need to pick up a supported card and try it again.

I haven't tried ProTools on it because of the video card issue - my ProTools PC has two 22" widescreen monitors and I'm not going back to one tiny monitor if I can help it.

Ya, this is old internet chatter. These days you can run OSX from a Live CD just like some our Live Linux Distros. There's better solutions out there now in my opinion. Still a grey area for now. Apple company policy is not "Law" though I'm sure they would like it to be. A judge will soon decide if it's "legal" or "against the law" to run OSX on a PC. Then they gotta try and make this "law" world wide if it goes through. Best of luck to that one. People will climb a mountain if it's there.

so, kicking something old up.. :)

Does anyone know if this works with PT? other than the person mykhal metions.. I'm pretty interested since mac os x does have several advantages for me... Besides that it would be a very cheap way to runan 8 core mac...
And not least important, how legal is it..? I know Apple doesn't 'allow' to run OSX on any computer build outside Apple's firm...

I guess a judge will decide, somewhat, with the current Psystar case.

but is it really illegal? I know there's something in the conditions of Apple saying you can't sell OSX with a new computer, but with this Efi-X thing this isn't the case... One can build hi own pc, buy an Efi-x and buy a legal OSX in the apple shop and install it...

Apple is very concerned that their superior OS be run only on their hardware, lest they exceed a 5% market share and make lots of money like microsoft. I guess they will go to court to make sure their product doesn't find a wider audience...

Now, now. I think Apple's business platform is pretty smart. In a way, it's just like Digi's. They want to make sure their product works as best as it could (ADC....i know, i know), so they make sure it can only be used on hardware designed specifically for it. It would be like if Digi let PT be used on any old interface out there, instead of being used on proven, tested hardware.
