Default Just thought I'd share...

An album I worked on in January is finally out.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/ren...on/id362187031

Renegade Creation. Robben Ford and Mike Landau on Guitars and Vocals, Jimmy Haslip on Bass, Gary Novak on Drums. They are doing bluesy rock and hard rock originals on this album. It was a lot of fun!

The signal chain was: GREAT MUSICIANS -> GREAT INSTRUMENTS -> GOOD SOUNDING ROOM. Everything else is irrelevant.

And as a side note, the tracks I worked on (I didn't do the whole album) were recorded on PTHD with 192IOs... Can hear which ones they were?

Also, a big thanks to Dr. Ford and Maddawg (DUC members) for doing me a huge favor and assisting me on the session.

Anyway... enjoy...

Not a big fan of the songs, but it sounds amazing. Great work!

Just curious, was there any drum replacement/enhancement with samples done?

Nope. At least not on the ones I worked on.

No I didn't produce it. It was produced by Jimmy Haslip. Who is amazing by the way!! I engineered two songs... Richard Breen as far as I know engineered the rest, as well as mixed and mastered it.

the funny thing too, the tracks browniespeak heard as being different were ones I didn't work on. I did "Who Do You Think You Are" and "Where the Wind Blows".

So much for the sound of the "converters" or "protools" or "consoles" etc... I was told the rest was recorded on Mike's home system (PTLE, a 002 I think). Although I don't know if they tracked drums on it or not.

The session I did was the whole band live in the studio. We recorded the drums, bass, and guitars live. Then overdubbed vocals and a few of the little guitar licks/sweeteners. I know someone on iTunes wrote a review and said they sounded pretty much exactly like the album when seeing them in concert. I can attest to that, because the album is live for the most part!

I was a little bummed about the drum sounds on "Where the Wind Blows". When we were tracking it I had the room mics cranked and squashed to hell to give it a "zepplin-esque" vibe. At one point I even put a 16th note slap delay on it! But in the context of the album as a whole that wouldn't have worked, it would have stood out like a sore thumb...so they nix'd that and went more with the close mics. :-( It was a massive drum sound though...

A few of them sounded "smaller" than others as I listened on my laptop...

I'll play them on my main rig 2morow so I can really hear them as they are...

But either way, 2 or 12, good work...

SOLD!!!

Any fellow DUCer who is part of a Shrapnel Records recording get's a 100% instant sale from me. Shrapnel Records was a huge influence on me in my youth as a musician. Well done! You captured the sounds of some well known musicians who can definitely play and perform, for musicians. Great to hear that Ford is still kickin' arse.

**I still have many Shrapnel recordings on vinyl...but nothing to play them back on anymore. Macalpine, Tafolla, Moore, Gilbert, Friedman, Howe, Kotzen, Becker, Sheehan, Smith, Malmsteen, Lane(R.I.P, you left us way too young) etc...ah...the memories of the first original Shrapnel 10. There was definitely no "Pro Tooling" that stuff.
