Default Best internal HDD for PT

I did a search here, but didn't find any good recent information. The internal recording drive on my iMac is failing. I got everything backed up, but now it's time to buy a new internal HDD. I have a mid 2011 27" iMac 2.7GHz quad core i5, SSD system drive.

I know Samsung makes some of the best SSD, which I have, but not sure on good internal HDD makers. I see the Barracuda mentioned a lot. Good drive?

Thumbs up Re: Best internal HDD for PT

All of the DSP-based systems where I work are using Western Digital Caviar Black 1 TB drives. I have yet to experience a problem with them.

As mentioned above, you'll find that the WD Blacks are the go-to recommended standard here on the forum for the spinners.

WD Caviar is actually the internal drive that came with my previous iMac 27 inch ... It's definitely fast !! but I wouldn't think twice if I am to buy an SSD as an internal drive (Samsung 840 Pro)

Best

I did notice that when I was running some diagnostics on the drive. It's lasted me quite a while and always been really fast. The 840 Pro is amazing. I use one as a system drive. I hear so many mixed things about using them as a recording drive. Some say its fine, others say its not. I think I'll wait until there is a good consensus before switching over to recording on one.

On a side note, just saw that you're in Lebanon. I'm actually headed to airport in about an hour pick my dad up... he's returning from a month long visit there.

The 840 Pro or 840 Evo or numbers of other good SSDs make excellent audio-drives. What exact objections are you hearing and from who? Waiting for "consensus" is probably pointless, you might be better focusing on the actual technical merits of any argument for or against.

The few concerns I see with with things like cell wear are just plain wrong and often seem to come form confusion about how an SSD controller handles cell wear. Actual cell wear across any good SSD today just will not be an issue in a DAW applciation. And the offer many times higher random IO throughput, higher sequential IO throughput compared to typical HDD. And a good SSD is likely to last longer than a HDD, and they are certainly more robust to being dropped or otherwise abused.
