Default PT HD (TDM) on a MAC MINI

for those thinking.. "this noobie ...."

http://www.magma.com/thunderbolt.asp

new mac minis with i7 are about as fast or more than mac pros from 2009-2010 (google it)

so now I can use my old PCIX cards on a mac mini (in theory) for an extra setup.

dunno about a rerecording mixing post setup but for small to medium sessions .. it seems it would rock !

PCIe only for now at least, so your PCI cards won't work.

From the pic I've seen, it doesn't look like the full size HD cards will fit inside this chassis? However, it could just be from the pic, it doesn't give any dimensions yet.

Depending on the cost though, it might still be cheaper to buy a desktop than a new laptop+Magma! We all know Magma's price scheduling of the past...

They have mentioned that MSRP will be under $1000, so dealer price should be even a little less.

There is a convenience factor to this as well. Imagine being able to unplug this from your studio computer and take it with your laptop to record something on location, or at a friend's house, etc.

Or if your computer goes down and you can quickly swap it out with another one.

Still need your 192 converters though if you're tracking elsewhere...regardless it's a pain, unless the whole rig is already mounted in a way to be mobile.

Looks cool though, and if it is indeed going to be under $1k for a 3 slot, then that's fantastic.

*&^%$ Mac Minis, give me a 27" iMac 3.4 Quad Core for $18xx at the Apple refurb store....fastest mac ever made for "single processor" tasks they say and proper screen real estate.

Non-issue. Sheet metal tin snips to modify this PCIe enclosure are $12 at Home Depot.

Here's a picture of the back of the unit, for what it's worth:

There's another picture of a nifty carrying case also.

Maybe in benchmark tests, however those are far from real-world situations.

I got a new i7 Mac Mini as a home media server, and my old 2008 2.8ghz Mac Pro 8-core runs circles around the Mini in every side-by-side test I've done between the 2 machines. The Mac Pro is generally done with tasks (Handbrake, Photoshop, iTunes encodes) in about half the time it takes the Mini to do them.
