Oh. So Digidesign can actually increase this limit on their end? I had no idea. Time to ask for 1 terabyte then. 3G isnt enough these days.

"If you minimize the PT window, this memory is freed "

This is true for any windows app. Try running IE for a while and do the same.

32 bit Vista is subject to the same memory limitations as XP and and can still take advantage of the /3GB switch. Since Vistas memory foot print is larger than XP's you might have to mess around with the /USERVA variable a bit to find the optimum combination between the OS and PT. It should still be worthwhile. PT 8.0 is now LARGEADDRESSAWARE and you dont need to modify the ProTools.exe any more. But you do need to set the switch if your running a 32 bit OS regardless of if its Vista or XP.

That isn't useful information.

Also, I recalled the command incorrectly. In Vista there is no boot.ini file which you can edit manually. You use BCDEDIT setuserva 3072 which will modify the default boot partition to be functionally like /3G in XP.

It's all fine you know, to have some switches in XP or Vista... great. But ??!! We are already for a while now in the era of 64bit and (say..almost) no memory addressing limitations. The mem kits are fairly cheap these days as disc size is cheap. We got a whole new amazing platform from Intel, the i7 with even triple channel mem etc. The Digi collegues of M-Audio have their 64 bit beta's for my ProjectMix IO out. I didn't try these yet though because before I'm going to spend some nickles and dimes to a new rig (i7 with at least 6Gb) I want to know if, and an estimate when I can run all things on a supported platform. Is Digi working on 64bit support of PT8? I couldn't find anything on the duc or digi site yet.....or I miss searched somewhere of course.

thanks
