To keep things simple, close the Strip Silence window for now. Your System drive is 5400rpm. It's recommended you record to a separate audio drive per the documentation:

Pro Tools supports recording and playback to a secondary drive that meets the following requirements:
  • 7200 rpm or faster
  • 9ms seek time or faster

It looks like you have Audacity and other programs open. Close them for now during troubleshooting. You have Insertion Follows Playback enabled. I recommend disabling this so you know where the edit/play cursor is located at first. Hit "n" on the keyboard to toggle it on/off.

Can you make an edit selection using the Selector Tool in the edit window? You currently have the Pencil Tool selected. Does pressing play(spacebar) show an error message, or does the play cursor scroll across the screen?

Is your Scarlett 2i2 interface selected in the Playback engine of Pro Tools? Do you have ASIO4ALL installed? I can't tell from the icon in the screen shot.

Shane: Thanks again. Taking a break for the evening. May not be able to get back to the troubleshooting 'till Wednesday due to school. Will be in touch.

Another thing to do is trash your prefs. You can do this easy enough using the Trasher utility app by guitardom. Also, make sure all your drivers for your laptop are current and up to date.

Good morning from Seattle, Shane! I have checked, and all of my drivers are up to date. I also installed ASIO4ALL. Is it really imperative that I have a secondary drive and that both drivers are running at 7200? When I originally purchased my PT 11 from Sweetwater, I read off to my rep there (Will Newbill) what my laptop system was and he assured me that I was fine for PT 11. I am truly appreciating your help in all of this, but I am also really dismayed to find that I may have to lay out more cash for updated or faster drivers. Can I live with the driver speed that is currently in my laptop and just get an external drive that is 7200? Why won't my laptop even do the tiniest task (i.e., record and/or play just one track) without a faster driver? Going to try and have my music tech instructor at school look at my PT and laptop today or tomorrow and hoping that may help as well. Again, thank you ever so much for all of your kind and patient advice. I am so new to all of this and you are being a HUGE help.

Matthew

Shane: I have also just installed Trasher for PT11, as you suggested. Matthew

Shane:

Holy cow! My transport is actually MOVING!! Hooray!! Now, is it OK to reset my hardware preferences to the Scarlett 2i2 as it appears that the ASIO4ALL has taken over? Will things still work correctly? Thanks (for the umpteenth time) for your patience in walking this "newbie" through all of this stuff. Somehow, I actually feel as if I am learning something! :) Hoping to hear back from you soon.

Matthew

Well, now my Scarlett 2i2 does not seem to appear anymore as an option... Do I need to reinstall the drivers for it?

Getting frustrated again. Have reloaded my 2i2 disc, but now the Scarlett is not an option in PT for i/o. The only choice is the ASIO4ALL. Dead in the water again.
