Default Pt 8 with AMD.

I just came back from guitar center to buy pro tools 8 when I guy told me that 8 has been having problems with amd processors. Any truth to that? I have had success with 7.4 and don't want to hurt my system.

Lets just say it's a crap shoot, Digi's been very busy lately getting things up to their competitions standards and haven't been qualifying machines, but I have 2 without any problems.

Ok, My bussiness it's about PC's, so I enssamble CPU since Pentium 3, Socket A, Celeron, the Pentium 4, was a great prosessor, so the Dual Core, and Quad Core. and for some reasons I have to start enssamble AMD, but since Semprom, Athlon II, Phenom II, but I have to tell you something about this Processors, Right Now for administration bussiness I Use one CPU With Phenom II X4 965 3.4 Ghz, 4 Gb on Ram, with a Hard Drive 250 Gb 7200, 256 Mb Video Card Radeon Chip, X300, everything on Windows 7 Home Premium. and you don't want to know about the Windows Experience Evaluation....
the evaluation give me 2.1. Pro Tools runs, but not like on my i5-750 2.66 Ghz, with same memory 1333 ghz memory Kinston Ram. with same Hard Drive and another Video Card 512 Mb. The Evaluation give 6.9. So in the Practice AMD doesn't work at all in compare with Intel i5 or i7, trust me.

I have 8.0.4 on XP SP3 on an AMD 64 X2. It's been fine and stable so far, but I definitely don't stress the machine. Not because stressing gives me problems, but I just don't do many tracks in my line of work normally and never MIDI or VSTis.

Cheers,

My ProTools system is currently down completely due to the fact that my computer is AMD-based and will not run my new PT8 software.

There's a huge thread on this, but the conclusion can be found in post #107 (page 11) of the thread by DigiTechSupt.

http://duc.digidesign.com/showthread...234575&page=11

I personally will never invest in AMD again, as I've run into compatibility problems with video editing programs and now ProTools. Others AMD users have dodged the bullet, but I'm tired of gambling.

Good luck!

Even though I have a soft spot for AMD, and appreciate that they once were by far the best choice for a PT rig, I will have to agree that Intel is the way to go for now.

This is the biggest load of crap I have seen on this forum.

I am running the same machine you are talking about. Phenom II X4 965 4GB DDR3-1333 3x 500GB HDD's, 1024MB video card and my windows experience index is 5.9 due to the hard drives, otherwise windows 7 rates my processor at 7.1 and that was non-overclocked.

I don't know what you are talking about nor where you got your numbers from, but I can assure you that you screwed something up.

My machine runs PT like a TANK, and I have never looked back.

NO problems with AMD processors and PT here. All a myth other than the Turion mobile chips if you ask me.

Oh....and the pentium 4's were not good processors. Complete crap for the price, and the competitors destroyed them hands down.

I don't know...but to me it honestly sounds like you work for Intel.

I think the problem here is specific to the Athlon series of CPU's. My 6000+ AMD runs PT8 just dandy, but my friend's Athlon 4400+ gave me fits trying to get 7.4 or 8 working. Going back to PT7 made it all work fine.

There should be no specific problems with current AMD processors - the issue described above is with older versions (2+ years old) that supposedly supported SSE2 instruction set, but actually didn't. Current AMD processors have that functionality and, as long as you follow the general guidelines for compatibility (no Turion, Sempron processors, VIA or NVidia chipsets only, etc) you shouldn't have any problems.
