Default Windows 7 Pro Tools 9 (not responding)

In windows 7 I have multiple applications open including PT9. When I switch away from PT9 for a few minutes the switch back, PT9 hangs with the application title bar showing (not responding) for about 10 seconds. Eventually after a few seconds PT9 starts working again. I'd just like to speed up my workflow so I'm looking for some tips to help correct this. Thanks !

More RAM might do it. I get permanent freeze if I switch apps while bouncing, then try to cancel the bounce. Nothing to do but reboot.

Probably caused by the Aero theme - I went to a basic theme to avoid this. BTW - not really a good idea to run other apps during a bounce.

Thanks for the tip about Aero. I'll check into that. As long as a session is not taxing the system much, it's no problem running most programs in the background on a multi-core machine. At my day job, I often have sessions consisting of a single mono or stereo track with a couple light plugs on it bouncing down for 20-70 minutes. I can surf the web all I want meanwhile - that's most of my DUC time! And that's on a G5 PPC dual core running 7.3.1. Today I'm home on my much more powerful Win7 machine with 9.0.1, and I can't DUC during a bounce? Oy. Well, I can, but if I hear something that needs to be fixed, I can't cancel.

Keeping clients happy is the main goal here. So that being the case, I never allow any online activity, any other open apps (other than ReWired), nor Windows Aero to exist while Pro Tools is running. These simple rules (along with all of the suggested optimizations) have kept PT as smooth as silk for us.

I have the same issue so I record my mix to a track. It's also nice because if you're 2-3 minutes into a mix and need to make a change at that point, you can make the adjustment and just resume the mix from there - crossfade and consolidate when you're done and export the region as a file.

BTW - just because I don't recommend running other apps while Pro Tools is running doesn't mean I don't do it!

Turning off Aero fixed it for me. Haven't had a lick of trouble since.

I usually mix to a track when going for the final mixes of a song or project. But probably 90% of my mixes are for reference or rehearsal - all that's needed is an mp3 to dropbox to people. In those cases, bounce saves a great deal of time and mouse clicks.

Before typing with crayons, please consider that some of us are using iPads. That took up the entire screen.
