Default PT 10 3rd party audio interface

My 002r finally died so its time for a replacement. I was looking to find another 002r but I remembered since PT9, 3rd party audio interfaces will work. Ive read that there have been some issues with some 3rd party interfaces. Does anyone have (or know of) a list of 3rd party audio interfaces that work with PT9 or PT10?

I came across some PCIe interfaces. Is there any advantage\disadvantage of running PCIe audio interfaces as opposed to firewire or USB?

I was considering the following:
Focusrite Saffire Pro 40
Digi 002r
M-Audio ProFire 2626
PreSonus FireStudio Project
Lynx AES16e
Avid Mbox Pro
MOTU 896mk3 Hybrid
MOTU 828mk3 Hybrid
MOTU Traveler-mk3

Lastly, I thought that Firewire interfaces were better than USB interfaces (in terms of speed and bandwidth). Is that true?

Of the interfaces you listed, I would lean towards the MOTU boxes, but you might also consider RME or maybe a used 003r(which still has a slight edge in terms of smooth integration). Only thing about the 003 is, PT11 will not support it

That MOTU 424 looks awesome however thats alot more ins\outs than I need. I only need about 8 outs about 4-6 ins.

Oh yea, I didn't think about future compatibility. So I should probably stay away from the 002r or the 003r altogether. Do the Motu interfaces seem to work well within Pro Tools? RME is a little out of my price range right now.

The Pro 40 has been very stable with PT9/10 for me and one of the biggest upsides is the flexibility of the MixControl software - perfect for configuring all the outputs easily.

I've got a friend who uses the Motu Traveler with PT10 and it runs great for him.

the new Mbox pro's are pretty stellar for both their A/D converters and price/performance. based on what you've written it's still a little tough to offer more advice than that. you'll have to consider the computer you own, number of mic pre's (if any) you want built in and portability.

maybe you could tell us a little more about how you plan to use it?

I'm not too worried about portability as it will stay at my studio location. I would like anywhere from 4-6 ins and up to 8 outs. I'm mainly doing 5.1 mixing however would like to be able to do some recording sessions as well. I would like some good pre's. I'm mainly running PT on a Quad Core MacPro with 9GB of memory and I have 3 Euphonix controllers.

so would a 003 console not work at all in a PT11 session? i may end up getting an mbox pro then.

Look at metric halo. Their 2882 should fit the bill. And as long as you get a newer unit with 2D card, you'll get some fantastic built-in DSP. And even if it's an older legacy unit (without 2D card) you can add that later. Either yourself or sending it back to MH for them to install it.
