Default Having Problem Recording at 96k.

I have a Digi 003R using Pro Tools 9.0.3

The problem happens when I use Superior Drummer 2.
The session is at 96k 24bit.
Buffer 64

one instrument track.

When I hit a tom or floor tom there is a low level distortion.
Like a fizzy sound.

48k 24bit sounds ok.

What could cause this fizzy distortion recording at 96k?

Here is an audio sample.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5801901/What%20is%20this.wav

Thanks

Philip

I think all the SD2 kits are sampled at 48K(and ezdrummer kits at 44.1K) so there is some SRC going on to work at 96K(although I am not certain that's the problem). Are you seeing any red clipping indicators on your drums in the PT session? What happens if you record the same in a 48K session? Just for the heckuvit, see what happens if you stick a dither plugin after the drum plugin

Thanks for the suggestions.
48k sounds fine. Adding Dither did not improve the audio.

If I lower to 128 Buffer size from 64 Buffer size the fizziness stops.

Toontrack said it was CPU related. 96k 64 Buffer size pushes SD to the limit.

Yeah, since upping the buffer clears it up, I would have to believe that. All my work is at 48 or 44.1K so I have not hit this issue As an experiment(if you are feeling bored), you could try running less RAM. The only reason I mention that is, one of my local dealers(who does complete systems for HD and video) swears that 6-8GB of RAM yields the best performance. He says it has to do with how the extra RAM actually taxes the system due to how it gets handled by the cpu. Assuming you have 3x4GB, will that mobo operate in dual-channel mode with 2 sticks?(I never even thought of it with my rig as its already sitting on 6GB).

All of Kontack's samples are 44.1k

I know 16 to 24 bit the DAW just adds zeros. But 44.1 upped to an 88.2 session halves the resolution increasing file size without any noticeable improvement

8 gigs: Glad for the tip Albee.

8 GB of RAM in dual channel should be great. For triple channel, I would do 6 (3x2).

I still have my OCZ Platinum Triple Channel 6gb kit.
When I get a minute I will pop those in and see what happens.
I will post back here with the geeky details.

Well I swapped out my 12gb of RAM with my 6gb of RAM and get the same fizziness.
No change.
