Default who is to blame for broken premissions and prefs?

how do disk permissions get broken so fast by a system devoted to only running this stuff? and when i throw out corrupt prefs suddenly the stuff works again...i tire of this blinking hand-holding and wonder how hard would it be to write PT with both of these "taking out the trash" steps checked before playback or at least every so and so amount of time?

There are utilties for OS X that allow you to program the Repair Disk Permissions command to run when you login, at a certain time of day, etc.

Permissions get changed by the user or by an installer. It's an excellent idea to Repair Disk Permissions after running any kind of an installer program.

I can't think of one instance where my PT prefs were corrupt. I've seen DigiSetup get corrupted, but not the prefs.

thnks CT for pointing out that feature in the OS. I don't think I have ever had a system install that was stable long enough for me to not have re-install or re-config issues on one plug or another. if your stuff runs stably i am happy for you. yes it is digisetup i think that needs to be tossed. we use soft synths and tons of plugs so something is usually corrupt sooner than later. the rig i am using: g4 dual 1.25 with 6.4 v9 HD3 accel and three or four different synth engines for about 12 synths. 50 or so plugs. blows up every hour when the synths are running.

Do you leave your Mac on over night? The OS is programmed to run system cleaning type utiltites at 3 or 4 am, when you're not supposed to be using it. Mac Janitor can also do the same thing.

HTH,

Iain

P.S. if you're having problems after installing any updates, it could be due to the bad permissions. Repair them using the OS X Disk Utillity straight after the restart when you install something. Lots of installers disrupt the permissions.
