Default DAE crashes when I double click it...

When I try to change my buffer size, the DAE crashes upon launch (i force quit out of DAE and then restart). ProTools is not open when any of this occurs. I am running 5.0.1 MixPlus on a G4/400, 256ram and tons of hard disk space. Can anyone help?

DAE should not crash if you launch it on its own. Replace it with a fresh copy.

I always launch a fresh copy on its own so it resizes its memory allocation.

don't start DAE on it's own, launch Pro-Tools, assuming this works fine on your system and access DAE through the finder,......... now you can change the buffer size.,.......... also read carefully the text mentionned next to the different options and what the manual has to say about it. Changing your buffersize can be as much the beginning of problems as the end of it. Check the amount of memory you've allocated to Pro Tools and especially dae before you go changing.

No, it doesn't crash when I launch PT. I just remember the manual saying to quit PT whenever you change the buffer size in DAE. I have made sure to keep my memory allocation to PT and DAE at the original values. I'll try reinstalling my DAE and see if that cures it. Gotta love those pesky manuals!

hkpwnetdDanny is correct. DAE should not crash if launched on its own. When you replace DAE, make sure to trash the DAE prefs (entire folder) from the System Folder>Preferences folder and empty the Trash before launching DAE.

-Do not alter the Minimum memory size of DAE (or Pro Tools for that matter) in the File>Get Info window. If you have, you can set it back to the default setting by typing a 0 into the field and press Enter on the numerical keypad.

-Reduce the Disk Cache in the Memory Control Panel to 512k and restart the computer.

Just a question....

Still getting my head round MACS! What exactly does trashing the prefs do?

TIA,

E

Thought I'd report a follow up on this matter. The cure for me was to simply enter the original Memory min and pref size for PT and to trash the big 3 (DigiSetup, DigiPrefs and PTPrefs).

How about that LINUX??<---s a r c a s m

E - Preferences are files that store user defined data connected with a program, i.e. in ProTools, what hardware you have selected. It remembers this every time you launch the program. By trashing the prefs you erase the programs memory of certain information that you have defined usually prompting the program to have that information redefined. Corrupt preference files are the cause of many Mac program related grief.
