For samplers/VI's you are dealing with both CPU and RAM... and the RAM limitation of 4GB applies since the VI's are hosted directly in Pro Tools.
In addition to the amount of samples that a VI loads into RAM, it will probably also take up somewhere between 128MB-512MB of RAM, sometimes more depending on the VI and how many instances of it you are using. You can look in the activity monitor app to see how much RAM each app on your system is using. Try opening a blank session in pro tools, then add VI's to it and load some samples, you will see the amount of RAM pro tools is using increase as you add more samples and/or VI instances.
