Command 8 offline question

I'm new to Pro Tools and Command 8. I'm running Pro Tools M-Powered 8, Profire 2626, and a Command 8 through a PC/Vista Home Edition/2.5g/1tb.harddrive/4g ram. The problem seems to be common from what I've read: Command 8 is offline and Pro Tools is unable to communicate with it. Before I launch into the myriad possible solutions, I have a question: Is it advisable to switch from Vista to XP? I have both available.
