Default Apple TV optical out into 192 ADAT IN

Hi,

I plugged Apple TV optical out via ADAT into the 192 ADAT in. Was hoping to be apple to watch movies in surround via the Studio surround system.

No Audio comes in. So Apple outputs in AC3 - can that be read in PT's? (no interest in spending $1000 on a plug in for just movie watching)

Any ideas how to make that work?

thanks

You need to clock from the optical in to get it to work.

But the only way to decode AC3 is with the Neyrinck plugin or other,
which as you say costs.

Sorry.

AppleTV talks S/PDIF for stereo, Dolby Digital for surround.

If the AppleTV is outputting S/PDIF on it's TOSLINK output and the 192 TOSLINK input is configured to receive S/PDIF it will work. At least for stereo music. I can't remember if you can force the Apple TV to send S/PDIF stereo for stuff that as Dolby Digital originally (look in the setup menus).

There are scads of low cost Dolby Digital decoders on ebay with s/pdif or toslink inputs and 5.1 analog outputs. Many are in the $20-30 range. With analog outputs, you can plug one directly to your speakers. If you really want to record into pro tools, analog into an interface will easily be as good or better than the decoded Dolby Digital audio. Would one of those do the job?

For the record, just to be nit-picky, s/pdif is not "stereo" but is one of the methods to serialize ("stream") data from one point to another. Dolby Digital and PCM (full resolution "stereo") data streams can be carried on an s/pdif channel.

To be even more nit-picky TOSLINK still carries S/PDIF! Just in optical rather than electrical form.

An old receiver with pre-amp outs feeding your interface.

And you are not going to find it (AC-3 to ADAT box).
