I didn't notice much, if any, difference. I say if your G3 is stable running 8.6, LEAVE IT until you have a legitimate reason to upgrade.

I don't think potential improvement in PTLE performance is worth the headache and effort required to upgrade.

Just my thoughts...maybe someone else has seen an advantage to 9.1 for PTLE.

i used to be a HUGE 8.6 fan.

i can assure you, 9.1 is awesome. 9.0.4 is kinda-kooky though i agree.

i could not go back to 8.6 as musc as i loved it at one time.

9.1 is not slow. i think it might be faster than 8.6, i am not sure, maybe just 'smoother'.

i can run pt, print, use adobe stuff, and surf the net with ONE extension set in 9.1.

i could not quite ever get that to work with 8.6
you couls always do what i did, install 9.1 on another drive while leaving 8.6 alone, just to compare.

i still have 8.6 on my drive but have not used in in 2 months.

8.6 is historically very likely the most stable Mac OS to date...9.1 hasn't had a long enough life to be proven one way or the other. Also, your particular machine is likely optimized for 8.6 and might not run as well under 9.1. Stay with it until you have a clear need to try 9.1...I doubt if it will give you a significant speed increase, either.

Same here!
Just to be safe, I kept my OS 8.6 on a separate drive.
I almost wanted to use-it again when I tried 9.04.
I didn't! Than I upgraded to 9.1 and now it's been a long time and I have no intention to go back!
9.1 rocks!
....but I was worried myself when I had to do all the updates....
....like now, when I am still waiting to go PTLE 5.1......

I am running 8.6, won't give it up until I have to. I have had no problems with 8.6. I think if you do a seach you will see some of the problems people are having with 9.04 and 9.1. I don't beleave you will find any complains about 8.6. Save you money and up grade when and if Pro Tools ever works with OS X. Until then if it is not broken don't fix it.

yep,
running a Beige G3 266 DT with OS 8.6 and PT LE 5.1-it seems alot more stable than with PT LE 5.0.1 (a crash dummy). I know i'm supposed to be using OS 9.0, but why if its working?

I made a few attempts to change to 9.1, because of software requiring at least system 9 (there are few, but there are). it always ended in reverting to 8.6. okay, 9.1 ist fast and its stable, but for me (7600, 400 Mhz, Voodoo 3/2000) 8.6 always was significantly faster.
