A few let downs spec wise, but a needed update away from the old core 2 duo cpu's...

I'll be upgrading my 2009 MBP 13" to the new base model 13"

Those quad core i7's will be amazing for PT9 with the toolkits!

Now if digi will release an HD card capable of the new thunderbolt technology we can say good bye to desktops for good.

Yeah....Maybe Digi/Avid is working on new interfaces able to handle Thunderbolt !
But still...If we can plug an external HD thru TB, it will mean...No more daisy chain with FW interfaces.
Let's see if our beloved company Avidesign's gonna take advantage of this new feature...

Any thoughts as to whether the 750 GB HD at 5400 rpms would be OK as a "system" drive (audio files and VI's external drives), given the faster processor and other parts, via Firewire?

I'd kind of like the extra 250 GB of space, but not sure if 5400 rpm is going to be an issue.

Thoughts?

You'd be better off buying a 7200 drive from OWC and installing it yourself. You can check out the options on this page:

Note that they may not yet have upgraded the options to include these just announced Macbook Pros, but that should be updated in the next few days.

Don't expect miracles updating the system drive to 7200. I just upped to a 7200 Travelstar from a 5400 Fujitsu and the performance is difference is negligible. Theres a risk of damage when hacking apart a MBP so you need to ask yourself whether it's really worth it.

It's not going to help Pro Tools sessions because they should be external anyway.

I would put an SSD in before a 7200. A fast SSD will make a much more noticeable difference.

Good point here. I took the 5400rpm out of my 13" and put a 7200prm in. The only big difference I noticed was it was way louder.

I do disagree though about risking damage to your MBP upgrading the drive. It's really easy to do if you take your time. If you have any technical savvy at all it's a really easy, quick job.

I just sold my 2010 13" to make sure I got max value for it and bought an i7 iMac to replace it. I wanted a quad again (used to have a PC quad). I didn't think Apple would put quads in the MBP yet, so I didn't even consider waiting. But I love my iMac, and it's going nowhere. I still feel confident that the base model 15" MBP quad cannot go up against my i7 iMac for Pro Tools usage, so my $1899 on the iMac was a smart move. And I got this amazing 27" of real estate.

I'm excited for anyone who was waiting for Apple to come around on this though. This is a big step. If I end up needing a mobile mixing solution, the higher end 13" or base 15" would be great though. Maybe once the 2011 13" hits the refurb store a good deal will be available.

One rumor down. Next rumor is an upgrade of the iMac line.

Waiting patiently...
