USB disks on intel macs with pro tools 8?
Am I just slow or is this a new feature? Does Pro Tools 8 now suppport Record status on USB drives? Cause I sure as heck just opened a session from a USB harddrive connected via USB hub to my old Macbook...

Re: USB disks on intel macs with pro tools 8?
It's not a case of IF it will work, but how well.. The answer to that is that Digi doesn't support USB for recording (so they must not trust it), so it's not worth trying, IMO

Yes of course, but since it' always been a "no-go" option with Pro Tools at all other than as a transfer disk, has something happened that suddenly allows for USB HFS+ disks to be used in sessions?

Re: USB disks on intel macs with pro tools 8?
As far as I recall, Protools never prevented someone from trying to record to a USB drive so it is not a new feature. Some people have done it for lower track counts (with fingers crossed and a rabbit's foot handy). It is not supported nor recommended as clearly stated by Digidesign and just about everyone here. But just because you can, doesn't mean you should. Hey, you can somewhat record to your system drive too but you're asking for trouble. Do it the right way and use a second internal drive or an external eSATA or Firewre drive for your protools audio drive.

Re: USB disks on intel macs with pro tools 8?
Obsidian,
Thank you for your reply. AS I said, I am well familiar with the system requirements and reccomendations for best PT performance. But I have never experienced that a USB drive was anything other than Transfer class, never Playback and certainly not Record. For the record, I've successfully recorded some two hours 18 tracks to my system drive, so in some cases it's quite possible even if not reccommended. With Logic, I've actually recorded about 30-40 tracks to a speedy system drive...
