Default 9.1 Doesn\'t work on 9600\'s

Just a warning to others who might be trying to upgrade their older Macs!

After going through hell, I've decided, and tech support seems to agree, that OS 9.1 just wasn't made for 9600 macs. So I am happily running PT 5.1 quite nicely on both my 9600's with 8.6 restored on them. All is happy now. I'm just wondering what it is about 9.1 that makes it unstable on plain vanilla Mac 9600's? I'm sure this also rules out any chance of running 10.0 on my 9600's as well. If anyone else has beat this predicament, I'd love to hear some details.
Thanks!

Glad to know 8.6 is running, though!

I'm running 9.0 on my 9600/350 with PT 5.0.1. Solid as a rock here. Not sure how different 9.1 is.

hi, me too, running 9.0.4 on a 9600/ Railgun 300/300 mix++

Solid since the upgrade (three months) much better than 8.6 ever was for me

But I hope to retire the 9600 soon.. it's just not made for todays apps.

I installed 9.1 OS with Pro Tools 5.1 on a 9600. Works like a charm. Maybe it's because I updated from 9.04 instead of 8.6? Anyway this system rocks

People who have problems with OS 9.1 or any other usually have either bad/old hard drive drivers, incompatible out-dated software, or some kind of directory problems. Other problems on 9600's can come from which cards are in the PCI slots, since there is a known PCI bridge chip bug on the 6 slot machines that cause problems with some but not all PCI cards such as SCSI cards, video capture, and also cause problems with the G4 upgrade cards such as the Newer Tech cards. There are ways to solve all these problems but sometimes it means reinitializing drives, installing clean systems and not adding extra third party goodies. Also removing G4 upgrade cards and changing the order of your PCI cards can have a positive effect. I am very happy with my 9600 but I have struggled to keep up due to these very issues and as time goes by this will increase.
Face it: in the world of computers, things change fast, and software improvements we all long for are possible only because of newer more powerful processors, and better designed computers.

We are running 9.1 with PT 5.1. too.
Very stable, very few problems.
I would perhaps listen to the previous post about HD drivers.

Dido that.

BTW- Apple has warned that even the very first G-3 powerbook is not OS-X compatible.

Starting with the B+W G-3s and up...

I'm a happy camper with 8.6. I've heard that OS-X is slooooow compared to 9.04. And we all know how slow 9 is.

FWIW- energy saver works fine on 8.6. Unless you leave it for a few hours. Then sometimes it'll freeze.

Although I'm still waiting for my 5.1 upgrade to arrive, OS 9.1 is running fine on my 9600-350 with 5.0.1.

What problems are you having?
