Still on PT 7.4
Hi Folks!
Just a quick poll from anyone who has a similar experience... in your opinion, is it high-time I upgrade to PT 9? That does mean two Mac OS upgrades as well as the PT upgrades. Everything is working perfectly right now, crash free and fast...but in-the-end, would PT 9 be better? (Just a question to those who've been here before and went for the plunge. Thanks!)

Re: Still on PT 7.4
Yes.
It means upgrading to OS X v10.6. It doesn't necessarily mean two (2) Mac OS upgrades. What do you use PT for?

Re: Still on PT 7.4
Full time recording and editing at my studio. Just worried about losing even a single day if one of the upgrades were to go a little haywire for some unseen reason

Re: Still on PT 7.4
There are no major features that 8 or 9 has that I can’t live without, but there are some little ones that make life easier.
Plus side: Tool lock. Thank freakin’ God. Minus side: Graphics are slow and buggy. Makes fast editing suck. My big issue is that when you go back and forth between between 8+ and 7 it will redraw all the waveform overviews and make new modification dates on your files. I have a session that started on a combination of 8 and 9 and just had to do a couple days in a studio that had 7.4 installed. All the waveforms had to redraw (that was an hour of studio time), all my file dates are wrong now, and the backup for the whole session had to be redone. Now I’m going back to PT9 and will repeat the whole process. I thought about manually sorting out the files to avoid all that, but the fear of losing something made it not worth it. I just hope I don’t need to know any file dates. If you have outside clients this will be an issue for them, which version do they use? If you can’t afford to lose even one day I’m not sure how you can do the upgrade. bb |

Rich:
Start building your PT9 boot drive slowly in your spare time and after hours. Unless you have a very simple setup, there's no way to get fully-operational in a day. OSX is incredibly portable, you could build your PT9 boot with a laptop while you work. It's worth upgrading to, and 9 is much better than 8, so you'll be skipping over many of the headaches we had last year and the year before. Re: Still on PT 7.4
I'm on 8.0.5 with a Music Prod. 2. I use it for professional purposes, but I'm still not completely convinced it's worth it.
While I know it completely depends on my situation, still if anyone wants to chime in as to the workflow, sound or any other benefits they noticed, which made the cross-grade worth the money and time, I'd appreciate it!

Re: Still on PT 7.4
I've never really had an issue regarding latency with the plug-ins I'm using.

Hmmmm....
I'm on HD, but it seems more and more worth the effort and upgrade! I might plunge

Quote:
Upgrade to PT9 and Complete Production Toolkit 2. Some of the highlights include the FULL feature set for PTHD automation (Preview, Trim, Auto Match...), excellent portability (you don't need an audio interface to use PT on a laptop), many more tracks, and importantly MANY more busses, and finally, MUCH greater stability. You specifically will also benefit from a timecode ruler, OMF/AAF I/O, and a complete session import data window. Also, powerful groups, VCAs... It's worth every penny. Do it! |
