Default How do I swap a track?

Is it possible to take a track that's part of a PT session and has all kinds of automation on it, and do some editing to it in an external audio editor, then save it and when I open up PT again, that track is still in the session but with the new edited version.

I think I tried it once, but when I opened the session PT couldn't link the track. Isn't it enough to just name the file the same, or is there som other index in the file?

first off - naming the new file exactly the same isn;t going to help. There's going to be different metadata in original so depending what you want to do - it will not automatically relink if that's what you mean.

Couple of different routes you can go here I think. If it is just edits that you want to perform - I guess you could consolidate the original track's audio files into one big file and that that one to edit in the other audio editor. You won;t have the plugins or automation but maybe you don't need that ?

A better picture of what exactly it is you want to do and why could help to suggest an appropriate solution or at least provide a workaround.

For example, I have this song where I've manually pasted drums. But all the sudden I feel like I want to use a different wave sample on the kick, how do I change that without having to paste them all over again? Can I just link another wave file?

I also have some guitars with automation, which I want to re amp trough analogue gear and then put them back in the session, without having to do the automation all over again.

Don't think its possible(each clip also holds info relating to the timeline). This is a case where Drumagog(or any "replacement" plugin) would work. Something well worth adding to your system If you have Melodyne, that could analyze the track, export a midi file. Then you could import the midi file and use it to replace the sound(but I would look into replacement software and maybe find a demo).

Why do you want to do all of this stuff outside of Pro Tools. P Tools is probably the best editing software available. Everything that you are wanting to do is something that any of us who produce music do all of the time with, as Albee has stated, the proper tools inside of Pro Tools. You can start by checking out the Slate Trigger drum replaced plugin. It works fantastically well and comes with a big library of sounds. The rest of your file editing can be done within your Pro Tools program as well. If you check out YouTube you will find some very good and informative videos that cover basic editing functions in Pro Tools.
