phamtec, I have been informed by reliable sources the DA conversion is done in the interface, which makes the audio to the PCI card digital. Even if it is not, an additional 10-20' on the unbalanced audio in the interface to PCI cable is no different for us who have remote located our computers to keep fan noise to a minimum (and who wouldn't to do serious recording) to locate the interface at the computer and use long (audio) i/o cables to connect to the 001 i/o's. Given that the signal is already unbalanced and -10db, who is going to use that for anything serious. I know I'm not.

that's why we want the interface in our rack and the computer in the back. I guess digi001 is only a beginners tool. a few gripes, otherwise I guess it's allright.

You still don't get it.

How do you run Audio 25'? How do you run MIDI 25'?

It seems you have reliable sources OTHER than an actual Digidesign employee that explained the reason.

But PLEASE can you make some 25' cables to connect them up and get back to me?

Nothing like empirical evidence.

phamtec, how's this for "empirical evidence".

Digital audio can be run hundreds to thousands of feet depending on the format and the driver amp. Balanced audio can run 2-300 feet. Mobile recording and broadcast trucks (Effanel, Remote Recording Services, et al) have been doing it for years.

I've been running 50' midi cables with no drops or latency since touring with Miles Davis in the 80's. It is a regular practice in touring. (please don't give me the excuse that it's different because it's live vs studio.)

Don't believe what the salemen are trying to sell you. Just because they say it cannot be done doesn't mean it cannot. Perhaps you need a new clue book.

Cool.

You are getting close. I would dearly love to get longer cables as well, so maybe you could build a few of them up and I'll buy one off you.

Cool resume BTW. Not sure what it has to do with the issue in the post, but it was nice to learn a bit about you anyway.

For me the biggest issue has been the noise from the computer fan.

I’m quite pleased with my solution:
Because I couldnt move the Mac out of the way I found an old cupboard(?), a box with a door, cut a hole in the back for the cables and ventilation, put the mac inside and the 001 and monitors on top.

Quite quiet.

phamtec, glad to see you coming around. I'm researching this cable length problem, looking for a source for the connectors and/or cable assembly, and will let you know how I make out.
BTW, DIgi stated that the cable carries AUDIO DATA, not audio. Drop me an e-mail and I'll inform you of my findings. Our address in on the website.
