Default When to use the Dither

Should you use a Dither on the master fader when bouncing from 24 bit 44.1khz to 16 bit 44.1khz? I guess my main question is do you use a Dither when downsizing bit rate or sample rate, or both? Thanks!

Jsswtpmp182,
do you use a Dither when downsizing bit rate >> YES, and always as the very last step.
For converting sample rate you would use SCR, just before the dither.
hope this helps,
happy tooling,

According to Digidesign, you also use Dither even when you're dealing with 16 bit sessions:

Quote:
You should use the Dither Plug-In when mastering to a 16-bit file with the Bounce To Disk command, or when mastering to an external device that records at 16-bit. This is even when using 16-bit sessions.
Even though 16-bit sessions use 16-bit files, they are still being processed internally at a higher bit rate:
-32-bit floating for Pro Tools LE systems.
For this reason, whether you are using a 16-bit session or a 24-bit session, it is reccomended that you use the Dither Plug-In when mastering to 16-bits"

He also asked "I guess my main question is do you use a Dither when downsizing bit rate or sample rate, or both?", and I was just pointing out, as an aside to the topic, an interesting FYI that some may not be aware of.
At least that was my intention.
