Thumbs up External Hard Drive 7200 rpm 1-2TBs

Okay guys I am Rolling!!

I don't even know how to install the external to be the driver for my recordings on Pro Tools and FL studio, or if I will end up using the external hard drive as a back up and end up using the internal Hard drive. any tips, hints and recommendations?

Darryl said stay away from drives that say "green": but

That green drive is fine for backups, just don't plan on recording to it. Using a second internal 7200 rpm drive is the best route(cheapest cost and best performance). Many of us use a 3rd drive for sample libraries(if the VI allows you to specify where the samples are stored). For instance, I have ezdrummer and SD2. ezdrummer forces me to install everything to the C: drive, but SD2 allows me to store all the sounds to my samples drive, taking the strain off both the system drive, AND the recording drive Giving you tips is impossible without knowing the details of your system. If its a desktop computer, add internal drives. Some laptops allow you to add another internal, or to swap the optical drive for a second internal drive(external optical drives are fine). Remember, the rule is; use a separate hard drive for recording(it doesn't have to be external).

The reply above is great . You should take that bit of advice .

Do not use external drives if at all possible.
Keep Pro Tools on its own drive and keep your audio on another , internally if at all possible. . Always save as before save to , or your external will become your write drive . I learned this lesson just this week though a lot of slow performance frustration . In fact unplug your external until you need it just in case

If you save your mix at the end of the day to your external with a newer name or update . When you load that session you are loading playing it and recording it to and from your external drive . Because you didn't save it to your PT drive

External drives are slow . Use external for save backup files not playback files
