Rate these mics!
so im picking up a bunch of mics for drums. based off a bunch of recommendations from another board, here are the mics i have narrowed down to. BTW i am on a budget. this budget is the "spend as little as possible, but still get a great sound" budget.
heres what i got OHs = toss up Studio Projects C4s or NT5s toms = toss up. sennheiser e604s or e904s snare = 57 (already own it) bass = B52 now i can get the 3 pack of 604s for that 325 deal. the 904s i have to buy individually, but i have read that they are the "improved" 604s. i had my heart set on the NT5s, but i have herd great things about the C4s. they apparnetly have the same carioid pattern as the nt5s, can be made omni, and are $100 cheepr than the nt5s. so go ahead and throw your opinions into this thread. nothing is finial yet, so yea. im pretty set on the 52, and i already have the 57. i might use a 604, if i get the 3 pack, on the snare. i herd a track that used it for the snare, and it was killin. |

Re: Rate these mics!
That sounds like a pretty good budget list. I have been using the e604's and the nt5's my self. I haven't used the new e904's or the C4's but the 604's and nt5's do pretty good. I just replaced the nt5's with a pair of AT 3035's that I like better on drum overheads. Low budget is my middle name.

Re: Rate these mics!
OHs I'd submit a pair of the MXL 603S or 604. I've got a pair of 603S's and I love the hell out of them.
Toms I use the e604 pack when I don't have access to a set of MD421s; never used the 904s but I'm happy with what I got Snare... duh! unless you're doing really touchy jazz stuff Bass, the Beta 52 is nice, but I really like the e602. I've also got a D112 that I've been happy with. Any of them will deliver a great kick sound if you take the time to place the mic. |

Re: Rate these mics!
small update. got the studio projects C4 and used them in a few differient test runs as OH's and DAMN. beautiful sound. crisp, but not sharp. a nice smooth high end. only problem is it lacks a lot in low end. i know its not ment to pick low end up, but it REALLY lacks in low end, giving a slightly false overall reading of the set as a whole. oh well. thats why god invented EQ
