Record to disk vs bounce to disk
I am trying to rtd instead of bouncing to see if I notice the sound difference. I was wondering how do you apply dither with RTD since you are recording back into the same session that you are mixing in that is a higer resolution than 44.1 16 bit? I have all my tracks bussed to a stereo Aux that has all my master fader plug ins and it is feeding a stereo track for recording. So I am wondering where to put the dither plugin?

Re: Record to disk vs bounce to disk
just record back into the session on a new stereo audio track (don't forget to mute the outputs). don't dither at this point. import new file into a new session w/ the same bit depth and sample rate and use dither plug on a stereo master fader. now bounce to disk.

Re: Record to disk vs bounce to disk
record back into the session, then Command/Shift-K to export selected as files and Dither is applied automatically.

Re: Record to disk vs bounce to disk
From page 151 of the Reference Guide:
"When you export regions to a lower bit depth, Dither (with or without Noise Shaping) is ap- plied as shown in Table 10. The Dither setting used for any conversion is the Digidesign Dither plug-in ..."

Re: Record to disk vs bounce to disk
Due to Ross Hogarth and others at the forum "whatever works" talking about it, I, like others, tested extensively comparing bounced files to recorded files of the same exact material/mix.
I, like others, was stunned at how much better the "re-recorded" files sounded compared to the bounced. Now I record back to my session religously instead of bouncing. When dither is needed, for example mastering something down to 16 bit, I apply the dither at the end of my insert chain, record back to the session ( the dif. between 16 and 24 being empty bits) and once done, export as the file type needed as 16 bit files. A truly superior method that I was not aware of until following an excellent thread at WW forum. Best, M |

Re: Record to disk vs bounce to disk
Really?
I thought this "Record to Disk" thing was an urban legend. What versions of Pro Tools does this apply to? It can't be all of them. v5, v6, v7? Digi I would think would resolve whatever problem "Bounce To Disk" has if this is truly the case. |

Re: Record to disk vs bounce to disk
Yeah, I record to disk too but I always apply the dither (when doing 16 bit reference mixes) on an aux on the way back in when I am limiting. Of course i have an undithered 24bit mix and dithered/limited/smashed/client cut 16 bit mix both recording at the same time. try THAT with BTD.

Re: Record to disk vs bounce to disk
if I do not want Digi's dithering to be applied during RTD / BTD, do i turn it off in Setup/preferences' Processing/AudioSuite/Use AudioSuite Dither ? it is ON by default, right?
