I'm a former Windows user myself, so I assumed that OS X would have a bunch of tweaks for audio like you have to do with XP. But it's just not the case since the Mac and Windows OS run so differently.
There are a few tweaks, but they are pretty minor and can mostly be done in the system preferences pane. No need for getting deep into the registry, 'msconfig,' 'services.msc,' or any of that crap.
The Mac tweaks are on the general troubleshooting page, and also on the Digi site under Mac & whichever version of Pro Tools you use.
You can try this link and follow the links to where it tells you what to turn off & on in your system preferences, etc.
http://digidesign.com/index.cfm?navi...5&itemid=24400

As far as the external drive goes, I truly believe it matters which name brand you buy as long as it has the proper Digidesign qualified chipset.

I went the "cheap" route and found a hard drive dealer on eBay, where I bought a 160 gig, 7200 RPM, 8 MB buffer Seagate Barracuda for around $40 brand new. Then I went to Other World Computing (www.macsales.net) and bought the firewire enclosure (which was the Neptune with the Oxford 911 chipset) for something like $40-45. So basically for less than $100, I have a fully Pro Tools qualified hard drive than works LIKE A CHAMP.

Before I got the drive I have now, I had ALL KINDS of issues with some other external drives I was trying to use. Turns out they didn't have the Digi qualified specs and were giving me all kinds of buffer headaches, CPU errors, lost connectivity, etc.

Once I got the enclosure from OWC that had the proper chipset, it works flawlessly.

So unless you are working in a everyday working studio with lots of high-end gear, I don't think you'd have to justify the expense of the Glyph stuff. Just buy what you *need.*

awesome info JCHANCE, come to think of it?
when i bought the imac off the guy, he threw in an external hard drive, but it was a plastic case with a regular 40gig hard drive put in it, it does have 1 usb, and two fire ports, it just never occurred to me that i can probably use that?
cause he threw that in the deal at the last minute , and when he was using his rig, he was using the system drive for his beats and nothing else.
I'll check and see if that plastic case has that chipset on it/// thanks again JCHANCE

I'll second the other posters opinion on the OWC enclosures and using the correct Chipset. I also happen to think that Glyphs pricing WAY excedes any added benefit. Take the price differance and buy another drive or two (or three) and buy some backup software.

SUNBURST79, YOU GOT THAT RIGHT. i'm on a roll here,(hehe), i got lucky with the purchase of the digi 003 factory console" the guy just bought it this past sept. snagged it for 900$, heck thats the price of the rack.
when i went to pick it up, he showed it off pro tools to me hooked up to his IMAC duo 1.83 17inch that he had just bought too, well i was impressed and asked him if he would sell me that imac since it was setup and running with the ilok, he said nowway, his wife would scold him( OK THEN)
so i went home with my new toy, making plans on building a killer pc for it, then a week later he called me and said come and get it, well i told him that i had a 400$ budget for a motherboard & cpu, since i had all the other stuff for it, case ,vid card, and all that jazz, then he replied ($400), man i just paid $1,200 for it, NOWAY", *FINE*, THEN THE NEXT DAY, he said come and get it( YIPPIE)
and now the help i'm getting from you guys i'm way ahead of the game, so, thanks bros

From what I understand the Oxford chipsets that are recommended are made by Sony, I'm not sure how the actual chip is branded. If you already have the enclosure put a 7200 RPM drive in it and see if it works. If you don't get any disk errors than your home free. Even if the enclosure doesn't work with PT it will still be good for backups. Sounds like a good deal

I have a OWC Neptune and it's fabulous. Oxford chip, 7200 RPM, have it partitioned with part of it for Pro Tools sessions and the other as backup for my MacBookPro. I'm not one to buy an enclosure and put it all together, so I bought it already enclosed, on sale thru OWC for something like $120 (for 250 GB, I think) about six months ago. I'm on OSX 10.4.11 and PT 7.4.

Not sure about the UK, but this one would be a good fit from OWC:
