Default What are you guys using for monitor volume?

All,

Aside from those going through a console or mixer, what are you guys using to control volume to your monitors? I am going from HD out of my UA 2192 to Mackie HR824s and need some kind of attenuator.

Click on this link : http://www.studio-tech.com/StudioComm.htm

To me that is the best way to monitor your entire studio set up. Good powerful volume, lots of source selections,
lots of output selections, AND HAS "TALK BACK" to and from your Mic Booths headphones, and alot of ways to config it..

Hope that helps.....

Thats it. Trust me. I have NEVER been happier. It is truely ONE of the most pro monitoring devices you can get.
Chrystal clean, "invisible" as you can get(as you say), and just a plain good buy..

That one piece is "rack mounted" so it's not in the way, and what you do see of it, just plain looks cool. That other smaller piece with the volume knob on it is what you sit on your desk. It has a VERY smooth, nice, sturdy volume knob feel to it. And also ALL your buttons that you need to do/use are there for your convienence, and they all have a VERY nice , sturdy, but yet digital feel to them. Not like them huge , loud, spring loaded old school buttons....

It's VERY nice ---

For analog stereo monitoring, I use a Bryston PB-25, Class A, +4, balanced preamp. For digital and/or surround, the Tascam DS-M7.1. But, as you mention, there are plenty of options out there, that's for sure. A few I could think of, in alphabetical order (prices range from less than $100 to $5,000+):

Adgil
Coleman
dbx
EMM Labs (Meitner)
Grace
Mackie
Martinsound
NHT Pro
Prosonus
Samson
SPL
Tascam
Violet Audio

From our "Not-To-Rain-On-Anyone's-Parade" department... I've worked with StudioComm systems quite a few times, and I found them to introduce more hiss than what I like (even after careful calibration) and to have far-from-stellar dynamic range.
The point being that (as the quick list above partially illustrates), it's worth investigating with one's ears, in addition to one's wallet and recommendations. But you knew that.

I bought big knob about a month ago and returned it right away. Cables were all around and the unit felt like a flimsy toy.
Avocet definitely is the best choice but way too pricy.

For stereo work, you may want to look into a Coleman Audio M3PH or similar. This allows 4 input sources and three speaker outputs with a passive volume controller, phase checking, headphone port, etc. I use one for my setup and it works great.

I was using the Coleman M3PH until I had the pleasure of hearing the Dangerous Monitor. Needless to say I sold the Coleman and am now using the Dangerous 100% of the time. An expensive box but worth every penny IMHO.

I'm using the SPL 5.1 controller, it sounds really great.
