Default Syncing ProTools with Roland VS840

Hello All,

I'm nearing a purchase of the DIGI 001 (just awaiting XP support) and currently have a Roland VS840 workstation.

My intention would be to migrate my existing material from my VS840 to the ProTools LE Software.

I'm assuming that this may be possible track by track using the SPDIF connections between them.

Is there a way to sync these up so they start playing (VS840)/recording (PTLE) at the same time? (ie: so all the tracks for an individual song are lined up correctly)

Am I completly crazy trying to do this or is this possible?

Thanks for any comments/suggestions you may have.

Yeah, someone please answer this. I am in the same boat as ostrich99, where I already have the vs840 and will be getting a digi 001 really soon. Thanks a lot!

accameron,

After searching the DUC a little more throughly, I found this thread with may point us in the right direction.

(I'm having trouble getting the above link to work right. You might have to cut and paste it into your browser and make sure there isn't a space before the t=006153)

It doesn't have a step by step, but it might help us out.

I won't repeat all the Digidesign info (it's accurate), but I will confirm that it's very possible to sync any hard disk recorder to a Digi 001 as long as the hard disk recorder transmits MIDI Time Code (MTC). If it has a S/PDIF or lightpipe digital outputs, you can even transfer tracks from the HDR into PT for editing, and then fly them back...

I do this every day with a pair of Yamaha AW4416's and a Digi 001 running on a PC.

Here's a post from a Digi rep in responce to this same question asked by someone else:

Sync To VS840
DigiTechSupt Brent posted October 23, 2000 08:05 AM

Since I've personally never tried this setup, you may need to tweak some of the settings, but this should get you started:
CONNECTIONS:
-S/PDIF Out of VS840 to S/PDIF In of the Digi001
-MIDI Out of VS840 to MIDI In of Digi001

OMS CONFIGURATION:
-Open OMS Setup and Choose Studio>New Device.
-Choose Manufacturer=Roland and Model=VS840
-Enable Sends and Receives MTC and MMC.
-Click OK. If necessary, drag and drop the device icon on top of the Digi001 OMS
Driver to create a virtual connection

PRO TOOLS CONFIGURATION:
-Setups>Hardware>Sync mode= S/PDIF (RCA)
-Peripherals > Synchronization: Device= Generic MTC reader, Port = VS-840 (or, try
"Any")
-Open the Session Setup Window and make sure the Session Start Time matches
that of the VS840.

VS-840:
-Set to Master
-Sync Mode = Internal
-Select MTC for MIDI OUT
-MTC Type = 30 (fps)
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Since this came from the Mac forum, you can skip the references to OMS - Windows doesn't require OMS.
