A universal binary is, in Apple parlance, an application bundle that runs natively on either PowerPC- or x86 (Intel)-based Macintosh computers

When you see the Universal symbol on Mac applications, that means they’re made to run on both Intel- and PowerPC-based Mac computers. Simply install them as usual.

When you do a "Get Info" on an application, it will say one of the following:
General->
Kind: Application (PowerPC)
Kind: Application (Intel)
Kind: Application (Universal)

The first 2 will only run on that platform, the Universal will run on both.
