Default newbie question

I have been using pro tools now for about 2 weeks, my question has to do with the input path on an instrument track. When I set up an instrument track to record sampletank or some like virtual instrument, i cannot hear anything unless I set the input to mic 1/2. I don't seem to follow this logic since the input is coming from within the software and/or computer and not a mic or line. I don't want to sound stupid but, if anyone knows why I have to set the input to my phyical rack input please share the knowledge.

This happens when you use plugins that are not 7.x compliant/compatible. Older versions of some plugins, and plugins that do not follow the plugin development specifications for 7.x closely will exhibit this behavior.

Sampletank is one of the ones that behaves like this with older versions. Download and install the latest version from IKMultimedia. There is also an update for sampletank available on the Ingnition Pack updates page.

thank you very much, I checked out your web site last night, that is when I noticed this problem. I was going through one of your tutorials. So normally no input would be fine, its just older versions and particular versions of plugins that do this
