Default Cranesong Phoenix

I'm demoing it right now, but I'm still not quite able to get my head around it (is that the expression?). I can get the source darker and brighter depending on which plug-in I choose, but an eq or a compressor can do that.
But the real trick, as far as I can see, is to enhance transients and "air". There also seems to be some compression on the signal, at least with some plug-ins.

Would you mind giving me some pointers on how you use this plug-in? I know it's a tough one to answer, since it varies greatly with what kind of work you do and what kind of material you work with. Do you for instance stick to just one kind of plug-in for each mix?

To re-phrase a bit...what is this plug-in's really strong side?

The fact that it's still making loads of money for Crane Song?

Thanks, I'll try that in the next mixing session.

Yes, that seems to be the case. It will definitely take some trial and error to find the flavor most suitable for each track/mix.

PT Lover, if you do a simple DUC Search using "phoenix,'" you'll run across several good threads with enough "how-to' information to keep you busy for quite some time. You'll learn about where in the chain to insert Phoenix (yes, this is important! Oh alright, I'll tell you: it always goes in last. Phoenix should always be the last insert on your track....), what settings/colors to use for what situations/ instruments, and much more. I'm assuming you already RTFM-ed the pertinent documentation from Crane Song, of course.

One thing you MUST come away with (or the plug-in is almost a waste of money): Phoenix has a cumulative effect, the whole of which is greater (or at least different) than the sum of its parts. Use Phoenix on the way in, on the way out and as many other places as you can think of. That's the general idea, and sure, it can be taken too far, but try it and see what I mean. Also, explore what others have to say about this topic in other threads.

Just for kicks, try combining two or three Phoeni (--is that the correct plural of Phoenix? surely its not Phoenices! someone help me here--) on one track and playing around with the settings. You can get some very sweet (or not) distortion this way, but that's the obvious trick. There are many other colors you'll find when you use it like this.

Now I've RTFM, STFM, STFDUC and read your reply. Excellent. Thanks a lot, sir.
