Default Re: Best Desktops for PTLE

I built an "Allenstien" machine last year using an Asus A7V333-X motherboard and I'm having a bunch of problems with the onboard USB. I know alot of people have this board so I thought I might get some advice.

The problem is that the system will not recognize some of my devices. When it does work it's frustratingly inconsistent. I have an Evolution midi controller keyboard that never seems to be recognized and recently a USB hub that's not being seen - or when recognized, still doesn't work.

The one thing that has worked in the past has been to delete the "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller." Windows XP then would re-install the Controller and then poof - finally install my missing devices. However, when I reboot the system everything reverts back and I have to do it all over again. Lately, even after the controller reinstall, it still will not pick up my devices correctly. What's crazy is that the system recognizes my Pace ilock fine; every time.

What am I missing here?

What would be the current "under $600" machine for a DIGI002 with Pro Tools LE 6.1.1?

Thanks for your input, Allen...

The 10,000 RPM hard drive would be pretty good for PTLE....maybe I should change my order and get two of these fast drives??
That might be best, or it may be overkill. Haven't seen anyone run two of them here yet.

The onboard firewire of the k8V motherboard works well with the 002.

Allen,
Would there be any advantage of having an Audigy 2 sound card with this system...or is the sound on the ASUS mobo sufficient?
Sound on motherboard is sufficient for windows operations. If you need another card for recording, then I'd do some checking on the DUC for compatibility issues. Try the FAQ thread here.

Hi,

I'm about to buy a new desktop, I'll use it with the digi002R.

I would be very happy to get your comments about it.

Processor - AMD athlon xp 2500+ barton.

motherboard - here I'll need your help...
1.gigabyte 7n400 pro2 Nforce2
2.abit NF7-S Nforce2
3.abit AN7 Nforce2
4.abit KV7 kt600

memory - Geil special, dual 256 MB = 512MB

display card - Gainward Geforce FX5200 128MB.

hard drive - Samsung 7200rpm 80 GB SerialATA x 2.

Thanks.
I'm not familiar with any of these so I'm not able to comment on them. Anything wrong with sticking to a proven system like I have posted on the first post of this thread?

Allen

Hi Allen,

Last post, I promise!! I found a buyer form my P4 system for a decent price - and I just can't get the performance I need out of it, so I'm selling it and building my Allenstein:)

Had one question, I'm planning on using an external EZQuest 120GB firewire drive as my audio drive and so I'm just getting a 40GB WD drive as the system drive.
Do you think using an external FW drive would give a performace hit and I shoould use a 2nd internal SATA drive instead?

Here are the specs (I don't need a sound card do I?)

AMD Athlon 64 3200+ ADA3200 RETAIL BOX
ASUS K8V DELUXE VIA K8T800 DDR400/333 AMD Athlon64 ATX
PC3200 DDR400 512MB Samsung Lifetime warranty
Western Digital 40GB 7200 RPM 8MB ATA 100
X-GEAR Black 350wt w/ USB Ports Side Panel W/UV Blue LED Fan ATX
Video Cards ATI RADEON 9200 VIVO 128MB DDR 8X AGP DVI+CRT+TV+VIVO
CDRW Lite-On CDRW 52X32X52 IDE INT BLACK

comes to $810

I'll keep the XP Pro CD from my Dell and install it on this machine (that's somewhat legal right?)

thanks,
Roby

We used to get better performance using external firewire drives than internal ATA drives, but lately with then newer motherboards and faster hard drives, the internal drives are better. Either way you will be fine. I'd probably go with the internal drive myself and think about a DVD-R or firewire drive for backing up.

On the WinXP issue: When I talked to the Microsoft people they said they allowed XP to be installed on two computers, one laptop and one desktop. Not sure if that is true anymore though. I like to stick with copyright laws myself. You may consider that new E-Machines Athlon 64 3000 laptop too. That thing is a great performer so far for around 1300.00 at Best Buy (with rebates).

How are you recording more than 8 tracks at one time with a 001? I am new to the 001 and Pro Tools realm and you've got me stumped!

Dre' B.
You can record up to 18 tracks simultaneously actually, but the test we are performing does not involve tracking. We are just arming the tracks for recording and hitting playback to test the potential of the systems.
See the FAQ thread on how to record more than 8 tracks with 001.

Welcome to the DUC.

Hi Allen

I can't find my answer so I thought I'd put up a post. Does the 64 bit AMD work with PT 5.3 or do you need 6.1? Thanks

Wayne
