Hi guys,
I'd like to build a new DAW, and I need some help. System needs to be stable running Pro Tools 10 with a Digi 003 (planning upgrade to a UAD Apollo within a year). Video card needs to have dual-monitor capability. I do a lot of work with virtual instruments. Kontakt, Maschine, Trilogy, Atmosphere, Omnisphere, Nexus, and Addictive Drums are the regulars. I'd like to stay close to a budget of $1,000. Please let me know what you think is best within this budget, or if it is unrealistic. I already have hard drives. All tested suggestions are welcome.

A $1K budget can work under 2 circumstances;
1-copy a known-working AMD rig(not my choice) 2-buy used parts for an i7 socket 1366 rig with a 980X 6 core and 6(or 12) GB of triple-channel RAM on an X58 motherboard(this is a known-solid platform and I have seen the mobo/cpu/RAM combo on eBay for around $500) ![]()

With the hard drives already taken care of, I think you can go with a newer gen than LGA1366.
Quad core i7 LGA1150 plus motherboard can be done for $400-500, depending on the speed you want. From there you have another $500-600 to spend on RAM, graphics card, case, PSU. I think that's very doable if you go for a graphics card that is good for PT but not in the past few generations of "gaming" cards.

Thanks guys!
I've been looking at the options you suggested, and some of the builds on the i7 page. I’d prefer to stick with Intel. Also, I'd rather not buy anything used or discontinued, because I live in Jamaica and replacing parts usually involves shipping from the US, which takes forever, especially when only a few retailers carry them. I’ve been through that nightmare one too many times. Would $1,500 be sufficient to get me a decent system with new parts? I haven't built a system in years, and I have no clue about any of this stuff any more, so my opinion on specific parts doesn’t count for anything. Anything I build now will be super fast in my eyes, since my current DAW is probably five years old or more now (Gigabyte GA-EP45T-UD3LR). I’m really hoping I can just look at a list of parts, buy exactly what’s on the list, and have a fast and stable-as-a-rock system with no worries. I’m not planning to do any overclocking or anything fancy. I don't want to do any experimenting or testing. I'll buy exactly what I'm told works here. P.S. - I have a case already too.

I've saved a shopping cart at Newegg that contains what would make a good, very powerful DAW that includes the latest i7 processor, 16 GB of RAM, SSD for OS, 2 TB spinner for samples/recording, nice case, great cooler for CPU, 750 watt power supply (more than enough & quiet) DVD burner and video card. Price came to $1009 + shipping. Monitor, OS and keyboard/mouse would be up to you. Get me your email address and I'll send you a copy of the cart. Later.
