Default Recommend interface for field/foley's recording with MacBookPro & PT 11 HD

Hi guys,

for the upcoming movie production, we need to record few field recordings as well as some foley's. I have already Pro Tools 11 HD and MacBook Pro 15"(2.3Gh,16GB,512GB flash) and I am looking for a good quality interface to take it on location and be able to record directly into ProTools, while running video track as well. Has anybody had good recording experience and can recommend USB/Thunderbolt smaller interface, for simult.recording of max 2 mono/1 stereo tracks?
I was looking at Appogee Duet/Quartet, but in order to get Pro Tools I/O for minimal latency, you would need to buy Avid version and that include Pro Tools software that I don't need (have two already). Any other suggestions?

thanx, Nedd

why do you need minimal latency for that application?

perhaps is that not necessary, I don't even know how much would latency be and how far can I go in the playback engine while recording and playing back movie file. It looks to me that with Pro Tools I/O you get more integration of hardware/software. So, if the latency is not that important, do you have something to recommend Frank?

You can have a low cost mBox pro or high end Metric Halo interface.
Have you consider to have a separate video playback (leave it on the picture department) and getting something like Sound Devices 744T or 788T?
You can also synchronise them together using the Time Code functionality.

thanx Michael,

I would prefer to have video with me, on the MB, so I am looking more for the audio interface option instead of standalone recorder. We have few mics, just need interface with discent preamp and good friendship with Pro Tools HD.

For recording fx and foley latency is a non-issue IMO. Low latency is needed when you need head-phone feed for a singer who needs to monitor himself though the interface while singing for example.
Don't need that for a foley artist. Neither for FX recordings.
Which means you can use whatever interface you like.

I use a apogee minime and sometimes a Focusrite Scarlet Solo or Dual. You will have to keep your MB a fair distance from the microphones as the fan will come on if you are running video with protools. If money is no object - get the Millenia HV32 or 35 mic pre's They can be powered with 12-15V and are very clean. With a AD they will be killer for foleys

I used to do (for years) what you intend - but I ended up using a Recorder and no video reference - I found that doing a few blind takes give me more options - especially if I have the luxury of re-recording things that I got wrong. Also - in sunlight I found it really hard to see anything on the screen...so get a hood for the mac!
