using external boot drive for main OS
Does anyone know if an external Firewire 800 boot drive will work well with audio production? I would ONLY be using this drive for OS and applications. It would NOT be used for projects, recording or any samples.
Sample libraries would be on internal hard drives. I have a Dual 2GHz G5 with 4G RAM. Thanks |

Re: using external boot drive for main OS
Hi peppertree,
Thanks for the reply! Can you be a little more specific? For instance, do apps take longer to load? Are you able to run a lot of VI instances? What happens when running a lot of plugins (compressors, EQs, non VIs) from the external drive? What kind of system do you have? Is there anything that you don't like about it? It's a lot of work to completely overhaul everything. I know it's a lot to answer but any help would be really great! Thanks |

Re: using external boot drive for main OS
There's not much difference if the drive is reasonably perky. Not sure if a G5 has fw800 but if it does it should be fine. I have only tried PT that way recently on a Mac pro but I have booted from external drives going back into the early 90's.
The advantage is you can carry your entire configuration with you to other studios. I have LE and HD on the same boot drive for portability, with all my plugs etc.

Re: using external boot drive for main OS
My firewire 800 drive is 500G, 7200, 16 MB cache. I plan to partition it and use the first 80 G or so for only OS and apps. You think this would be OK? What do you use for your boot drive?
How much RAM do you have? Keep in mind I only have 4 G RAM. |

I think you'll be fine. If anyone knows different, speak.
