Default Alesis AI 3 Interface Questions

Hi all.
I just picked up an Alesis AI 3 interface unit in order to use my Digi 001's 8 additional light-pipe inputs. I have a few questions for those of you in the group that may be using one.
1)Do I have to set my recording sessions sample rate to ADAT rate (48 kHz)? The AI 3 only runs at 48 kHz.
2)How do I set up the synch in Pro Tools LE? (ie, internal, external, optical, ADAT)
3)Does "bouncing to disk" after recording at 48 kHz 24 bit rates cause sonic artifacts when converting to CD format? (16 bit, 44.1 kHz)
4)Any suggestions on shortcuts to relieve potential head aches with this system would be helpful. My only intention is to use the AI 3 to allow more "real time" input into my 001 and Pro Tools LE.

Thanks for any help you can provide, T-Man

T-Man,

"1)Do I have to set my recording sessions sample rate to ADAT rate (48 kHz)? The AI 3 only runs at 48 kHz."

AI-3 should run at 48 or 44.1. It will sync to the clock coming into it's optical input.

"2)How do I set up the synch in Pro Tools LE?
(ie, internal, external, optical, ADAT)"

You need to leave your setting in PTLE to internal.

"3)Does "bouncing to disk" after recording at 48 kHz 24 bit rates cause sonic artifacts when converting to CD format? (16 bit, 44.1 kHz)"

I think it might. Do a search on "dither" and "SRC" or "sample rate conversion".

"4)Any suggestions on shortcuts to relieve potential head aches with this system would be helpful. My only intention is to use the AI 3 to allow more "real time" input into my 001 and Pro Tools LE."

That's about it. Just be sure to hook up the optical cables both ways for proper sync.

Good luck!

Bill

Default Re: Alesis AI 3 Interface Questions

I have PTLE set to external sync. and the AI3 is the master. That way I can use the optical out on the 001 to feed a CD burner. Is this a bad idea?
