In my book you always go for internal if you can.

Internal is not nessessarily faster, check the rpm's (won't get too many tracks on a internal 5400rpm drive...). Go for the fastest drive you can afford.

Now if your refering to bus speeds, internal drive are generally faster and more reliable. I know a few people who use firewire drives to record to. USB is generally NOT recommended.

I record to an external Glyph GT 050Q and love it. I can take the files with me to other computers without transferring them.

FWIW, I lost 1 track on the old DAVEC test between an internal drive and a firewire drive. Minor difference for sure. I have and use both but generally record to an internal unless someone brings a project that is already on a firewire drive(even then, I may copy it to an internal). Its so easy to add internal drives to modern systems. I have 4 hard drives and can add a few more if I need since my mobo has SATA ports for 7 drives and the IDE port only has the system drive on it.

Isn't there some sort of external SATA interface that would essentially get you "internal" drive performance in a "hotswap" type of configuration?

Thanks for the link...so basically, just get some external SATA enclosures, buy some SATA drives, hook it up and record! Nice...

Or get one of these and swap to your heart's content.

Actually I am going to get this triple unit so I can fast-swap(not hot-swap) the system drive as well.
