well my 2 cents would be its a great machine to have and i wouldnt want to be without mine.....far as mastering goes i would say if you have nothing else its great for normalizing before burning and the tools it has are usable but its not GREAT for mastering id say......if you get one make sure you set it so that it is at eye level because it can be a pain doing things if you have it down to low....for me anyways cuz i have to get up close to see what buttons im hitting on the menu....well worth the dough though is my opinion and i just saw prices came way down on them too so go buy one id say.....chas

Do you think it's a worthwhile investment, even if you always send your stuff to a pro mastering facility?

yes ....just ask the mastering engineer I think most of time they prefer a masterlink cd

also you can give him 96k files even if the session wasnt in 96 k through the analogue inputs

As a mastering engineer...no. Especially not if you mix in the box (inside pro tools). If you mix outside of the box, be content with the fact that the 002 converters are WAY nicer than the masterlink's converters (in my opinion). Just retrack it into an audio track on the 002.

There is no difference b/w a digital transfer to the masterling and a BTD. Don't send 96k files unless it was originally tracked at 96k...the typical mastering engineer has far better converters for performing an analog SRC than what are contained in the masterlink. Send your files as 24 bit, don't clip, don't overcompress or limit, and keep it in the sample rate it was originally tracked at.
