Good one - question have you ever used a D-Command? Is there much workflow difference? Which one did you like better ?

Try this; mute-safe the audio tracks that are feeding your aux track.
Is this HD only as well?

on mine cmd clicking (not ctrl) solo and record performs the safe features. However there doesnt seem to be a mute safe via ctrl or cmd modifiers

Create a solo Aux track, select no input and no output. Now select all the tracks (say, Drums) and that blank Aux track, now group them all. Now when you solo the blank Aux track your drums will all be soloed. Kinda poor mans VCA I guess. You could also add them all to another Aux as a Sub group. I do this for all my instruments, then you can place all these blank Auxes to wherever you like in the mixer and you have (nearly) full control over each instrument group i.e solo, mutes etc… Works for me anyway.

Send your drums to a bus,
Solo isolate that bus,
Make a group that includes all the drums and the bus,
Modify the group to include solo,

Now if you solo the bus, you get to hear all your drums.
If you only want to hear a single track within the bus, kick,snr..whatever..
- ctrl click the solo on that track.

Would be easier if PT was a bit smarter, Logic X is great for this kind of workflow.

It seems counter intuitive but this is the best way to solo an Aux channel. You can always ctrl+click (Mac) the greyed out solo button on one of the audio tracks to solo with the aux soloed.
