Default Comping MIDI parts....how do u guys do it?

Ok so comping audio is pretty simple to me. View the different takes as playlists and u can solo/listen to each part, move parts around, etc.

But how do you comp MIDI parts, and why doesnt it just work the same way (with the stacked parts)?

I feel like I can listen to all the different MIDI takes and put them next to each other. But what if I like just a few beats of one part and a couple bars of the next take and several bars of a 3rd take? Do I like cut and set aside, cut and set aside, etc....then place them all together? Seems super cludgy to me and, again, makes me wonder why I cant just comp like audio tracks let you.

What is your guys technique for this?

THANKS!!

I just try it a few times and when I feel like I've gotten an okay take I go in and quantize / edit my mistakes.

Playlist chomping would be nice but since its all digital info anyway the midi editor window is all I need once a get a good take.

Thanks for your reply! I use that method also.

Technically thats not "comping" though, but I appreciate ur feedback. It seems that comping MIDI using the "stacked parts" method is not within PT's capabilities.

I instantiate VI's on instrument tracks, and then I use plain MIDI tracks for additional takes if needed.

If I want another playlist for an instrument track, I add a few empty midi tracks and copy/paste FROM my instrument track, TO the midi tracks.

^ I guess that'd work too.

THANKS!!

....all of these things really shouldn't be necessary though. I hate to say it here in the DUC but I think Im going back to Cubase for awhile. There's so many aspects and functions that are way more intuitive TO ME. Kinda bums me out that PT is the "industry standard". Reaper and even FL Studio 10 are quickly becoming HOT for their ease of use and functionality. I've yet to come across a single feature in PT that I LOVE, and that makes it a pleasure to use.

Sorry for ranting...Ive just wanted to say this for awhile now. I REFUSED to use Cubase for awhile so that I could learn PT, but now Im just gonna go back, get a lot of work done, regroup and then try this again. Maybe by then there'll be an update that fixes all the THINGS I HATE ABOUT PT LOL!!!
