I did one feature film in 7.1, in my opinion it is not worth going 7.1. There are not enough plugins and the standard is still 5.1. Also, if you do true 5.1 you will use a lot more processing power on your computer. There are also other newer things coming from surround sound, like "front height" speakers. Check the Dolby site for the buzz

Garnoil,

Up until now, Front Height has been a function in the recievers that automatically creates the sound information.

Are you saying that now Post houses will start actually setting up speakers and mixing for this format?

Also depends on your clients. Disney is doing most (if not all) their mixes now in 7.1.

Good luck finding a theater that plays 7.1 though!! The El Capitan does, but I don't know of many others.

I just spent 7 days at Disney, Orlando. Their sound is great, all their 3d shows have multiple channel sound but theatrical stuff is not 7.1

I'm liking 7.1, it really opens up the surrounds for more pinpoint directionality, especially when panning through the room. More separation when panning BG's as well. I'd use it on all projects, but most clients aren't asking for it yet, nor do they have the means for projecting it in most theaters. Bluray seems to usually have 7.1, but how many home theaters have that ability.

The Dub Stage is now wired for it, and the MultiMax works great as a monitor controller. All mixing in Pro Tools.

Thanks guys! I almost got the multimax but as I only have 8 out's I went with the blue sky system. Chris we met BRIEFLY when I stopped in to talk to Marty in person on a visit there 2 years ago. As soon as I land an LA feature I'll be working at your place finally.
