LOL, good question.

You need PT 8.04 or higher to run on Win7, I would suggest 8.05;

Thanks for the help, I wouldn't have realized PT8 wasn't compatible with w7. PT is now booting up successfully. At least it hasn't crashed yet!

I wasn't able to find a 64 bit version of quicktime for w7. Has anyone had any experience with the x32 version?

I worry there is a communication problem between my machine and my 003 rack...sometimes when I go to open PT, it will not recognize that my rack is connected, even though the HOST 1394 light is blinking on the rack, and I will have to turn it on and off a few times before PT will boot. Occasionally, PT will inform me that it has lost a connection with the 003 rack in the middle of a session and force me to save and quit. I just recently received a DAE -6006 error. I'm not sure what this means, but I imagine it could be related. Thoughts?

First thing to try if you haven't done so already is plug 003 into a different Firewire port into computer.

Be sure to turn off 003 & shutdown computer before swapping Firewire Cable. Do not hot swap the cable!

Also try Control Panel>Device Manager>IEE1394 Bus Host Controllers and double click on 1st controller select Driver Tab>Update Driver (while connected to Internet) Search Automatically. Repeat for any other controllers listed. Then try port/s again.

Some folk have had more luck with setting controllers to use Legacy drivers but I'm unsure on how to do that.

The other thing is that Avid recommends Firewire cards with Texas Instruments Chipset. It is possible that you may have an incompatible Firewire Card which will need to be replaced if that is the case.

Then there is the cable itself. They have been known to fail.

Also, when 003 is switched on does it show up in Control Panel>Device Manager>Sound Video and Game Controllers. If not, you need to re-install latest drivers.

It wouldn't hurt to re-install them anyway; Install them with 003 turned off then reboot with it switched on. Wait for a couple of minutes while drivers get installed, you should get a message saying your device is ready to use.

Once you have it up & running always turn 003 on before booting computer up and turn it off after shutting computer down. I've found that the 003 seems to be more stable when doing this.

this machine doesn't connect to the internet. I download and install the drivers on my laptop and transfer them via flash drive.

comes up properly in device manager, i'm using 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (Legacy) as recommended in the w7 optimizations.

I built the computer based of the recommendations of the i7 build thread on this forum, countless other people are running this exact or close to exact set up with no problems, so I doubt this is a hardware issue.

That is very true, I will look into that tomorrow.

Thanks for the help zedhead,

FWIW..you will never find stability, whether it boots up or not, whether PT8 starts or not, with that PT8 003 driver and W7 x64. as another poster said, get a compatible version of PT8.x for W7 x64. good luck tho
