Non-Linear vs. Linear Reverb
Can someone explain the differences between Non-Linear and Linear Reverb and how/why each would be used in particular applications?
I've searched this forum, as well as a few others, Googled it...etc., but I've found nothing. I'm just looking for some understanding in this area.

Re: Non-Linear vs. Linear Reverb
A perfect example of non-linear verb is a gated verb. The tail abruptly stops after a certain amount of time(or decay). A linear verb will have a tail that decays smoothly until it is gone. Non-linear is more of an effect verb, while linear is more natural sounding(unless its overdone). Room simulations are linear. Gated verbs were originally done by inserting a gate on the reverb return so when the verb decayed a little, the gate would close and cut off the rest of the tail. GAted verbs can punch up drums and sometimes are good on electric guitar tracks. Let your ears be your guide. These days many engineers don't use any so there are no rules on this. Having said that, I like a gated verb and a room/hall on drums, a little hall/plate on vocals and acoustics. How much is a taste issue.

Re: Non-Linear vs. Linear Reverb
Linear Reverb is to "Total Eclipse of the Heart" as Non-Linear Reverb is to "Some Like It Hot"
