Questions about PT11HD with Tascam 2400

I'm new to PT and a rookie of a studio. I find out that one of the workstation of my studio is using PT HD11 with Tascam 3200. I'm wondering why PTHD can work with non-HD interfaces. Also, can 003 controller work with PT HD11? I find many posts that it's all about driver issue.

A: Keeping Pro Tools software open has been key to the product strategy since the introduction of Pro Tools 9 and remains so today.
Pro Tools 11 continues to support Core Audio and ASIO drivers to enable using Pro Tools with or without Avid hardware.
We have no plans to close off future versions of Pro Tools to work only with Avid hardware. added 5/31/13

HD will work with third party interfaces.
I used my DM3200 since version 9 by connecting it via FireWire with both native and HD software.
Now also, the studio could have the DM3200 hooked up to a couple HD interfaces via the TDIF connections.
I just recently upgraded to a PCIe Native card and 2 Digi 192s and I am connecting everything through the TDIF connectors. This allows me (almost) true zero latency monitoring since all my monitoring is done through the DM3200.
There's a couple different scenarios they could have going but it does work and it works well!!

Using a non-HD interface also means you won't be able to use any DSP the cards would provide.
